CONTENTMENT IS GREAT GAIN

TOPIC: CONTENTMENT IS GREAT GAIN

TEXT: 1 TIMOTHY 6:6-10, 2KINGS 5:19-27, GENESIS 39:1-10

AIM: TO TEACH THE CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS TO BE SATISFIED WITH WHATEVER THEY HAVE

MAIN EMPHASIS: TO BE A HONEST CHILD OF GOD

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

INTRODUCTION:

Contentment means to be satisfied with whatever one has while covetousness is a discontent with what we have and an intense desire for something else, or something we believe will make us happy or satisfied. Gehazi, the servant of Elisha destroyed his destiny by taking someone’s money (Naaman) and Naaman’s leprosy came upon him and his descendants forever (instant punishment). As children, we are admonished to cultivate the habit and character of Joseph to be happy with whatever it pleases God to give us despite worldly temptations so that we can always attract His heavenly blessings.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS:

  • What made servant Gehazi and his descendants to be punished by Naaman’s leprosy? Read 2 Kings 5: 22, 26; I Tim.6:10
  • What will you do if your request is not granted early? Read Dan.3: 16-18, Prov.3:5-6
  • Give examples of person who did not end well due to their habit of covetousness and those who got heavenly blessings for being faithful? Read Joshua 7: 1-26, Matthew 27:1-10, Matthew 25:19-23, Luke 19:8-10
  • Discuss the implications and resultant punishment upon King David in 2 Samuel 11:1-5,14-17; 12:15-19
  • What are the rewards of Contentment? 1 Timothy 6:6, Phil.4:19, Psalms 75:6-7

CONCLUSION: Always remember that true godliness with contentment in itself is great wealth. So, be happy and be satisfied with whatever God has blessed you with and be thankful.

PRAYER: O God, help me to find contentment in what you have blessed me with and may I not desire what belongs to another, Amen.

MEMORY VERSE: 1 TIMOTHY 6:6

But godliness with contentment is great gain.
