TOPIC : PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON
TEXT: LUKE 15:11-32
AIM: TO LET YOUNG PEOPLE KNOW THAT THEY ARE ALL PRECIOUS IN THE SIGHT OF GOD
Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world,
Red, brown, yellow, black and white,
They are precious in His sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world.
INTRODUCTION: How happy do you always feel each time you suddenly found someone you have been looking for? What If the person is your brother or friend who offended you, if he comes back would you still welcome him happily?
We are going to study how a father reacted to a boy who disrespected him and went away.
1a) Who were the three main characters in the story?
1b) What does each of the characters represent?
- i) Earthly father – Our heavenly father (God).
- ii) Older son – Jews.
iii) Younger son – Gentiles_
2a) What was the offence of the younger son?
He placed himself as a stranger in his father’s house and like the Gentiles/sinners he was alienated from God ( Lk 15:12-13; Isa 53:6 Psa 119:176; 1Pet 2:25).
2b) In your opinion do you think he deserved forgiveness? Discuss. (Lk 6:35-36; Eze 18:23; Isa1:18).
3a) What qualities were demonstrated by each of the characters?
- i) Father – love, generosity, inviting. (Lk 15:20, 22-24; Ps 36:7; Matt 22:9; 2Cor 9:8; Jms1:17).
- ii) Elder son – self righteous, acrimonious, resentful, proud. (Lk 10:29, 15:28-30, 18:11; Rom 10:3; 1Jn 1:8-9).
3b) Are there times/ occasions you have demonstrated/ exhibited any of these characters? (Discuss with examples).
4a) How does God react to every prodigal child?
- i) Always there with lovingly open arms to receive lost children.
- ii) Considers every child to be precious in His eyes and would threat every repentant child with dignity
iii) Always glad to see that his children have come to repentance.
(Jn 15:20, 22-24; Jer 31:3; Mic 7:18; 1Jn 3:1a).
4b) Children, have you realized that you have behaved like or even worst than the prodigal son? Have you considered coming back to God the Father?
He is waiting for you with open outstretched arms to welcome you. Come to Him like the prodigal son with a repentant heart and receive forgiveness of your sin through faith in Jesus Christ.
CONCLUSION: God’s great love reaches out and finds sinners no matter why or how they got lost.
PRAYER: Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive my foolish ways whenever I stray from you like lost sheep.
Reclothe me with a rightful mind and guide me never to stray away from you. Thank you for saving me from perishing in Jesus name. Amen.
