Topic: THE Reward of Humility (The story of Naaman the leper and Elisha the prophet of God)
Text: 2 KINGS CHAPTER 5.
There was a man named Naaman an army commander of the King of Syria. He was highly regarded and also the King’s favorite and had led the army of the Syrians to so many victories. But this valiant man was sick with leprosy.
One day some Syrian soldiers raided the land of Israel and took a young girl captive who became a maidservant to the wife of Naaman. The maidservant told her mistress saying “If my master will present himself to a prophet in Samaria, he will surely cure him of his leprosy”. Naaman’s wife told him what the maid has said then Naaman went to the king of Syria and told him what the maid has said to him. The King of Syria then told Naaman saying “Go to the prophet, and I will also send a letter to the King of Israel.”
So Naaman went and took with him ten gold bars, six thousand pieces of silver and ten festal garments and went thereof. On his arrival, he delivered the letter to the King of Israel. It said, “I present to you my servant Naaman that you may heal him of his leprosy.” When the king read the letter he tore his clothes in anger and said “I am not God to give life or take life, how then will the King of Syria send this man to me to be healed! You see he is just looking for an excuse for war.”
Elisha, the man of God, came to realize that the King had torn his clothes, so he sent a message to him saying “Why have you torn your clothes? Let the man come to me so that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel”. So Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stopped before the house of Elisha the prophet. Elisha sent a messenger to him saying “Go to the river Jordan and wash seven times, and your flesh shall be as it was before, and you shall be cleansed.” Naaman became angry and left. He thought and said “On my arrival, he should have personally come out and touched me with his hands at the infected part, and I would have been healed. Are the rivers in Damascus, Abana, and Pharpar not better than all the rivers of the land of Israel? Cant I go there and wash to be healed”? His servant then approached him and said “Master, if the prophet has ordered you to do something more difficult, would you not have done it’? But how much easier when he said that you should take a bath and you will be cleansed”.
In conclusion,, Naaman went to the river Jordan and dipped himself seven times as Elisha the prophet commanded him and became healed from his leprosy.
